A judge in the Central District of California ordered Apple to pay Masimo $184.2 million in prejudgment interest on October 5. That takes the total to $818.5 million, on top of the $634 million a jury awarded in November 2025 over a pulse oximetry patent.

Masimo asked for the 7 percent rate in the California Constitution, worth $242.7 million. Apple proposed $114.5 million and called the interest a windfall. The judge used Masimo's own cost of borrowing, compounded annually. Apple also owes 4 percent postjudgment interest on the full amount from July 20 until it pays, a point it did not contest, and says it will appeal.

Any wearable reporting SpO2 ships into this fight. Masimo has asserted more than 25 patents against Apple over six years, and the claim that landed covered the sensor rather than the algorithm. For a startup putting an optical sensor against skin, that puts freedom to operate in the hardware review and not in the software release notes.
