Carrot agreed to buy GreenMan Vision and its InSightVR lens simulator. The companies announced the deal on October 9 and did not disclose terms.
InSightVR feeds a patient's own biometry into a headset and shows what monofocal, toric, multifocal, extended depth of focus and adjustable lenses would look like before cataract surgery. A retrospective study of 609 patients published this year in Patient Preference and Adherence found 57.1 percent of InSightVR patients chose an advanced technology lens, against 28.4 percent counseled the usual way.
Carrot, founded in 2018 in Brooklyn as Virtual Field, says its virtual reality testing runs in more than 2,500 clinics and has logged over 6 million exams. GreenMan was started in West Fargo, North Dakota by cataract surgeons Michael Greenwood and Brandon Baartman. Premium lens selection is where cataract surgery makes its margin, so a tool that doubles advanced lens uptake sells to a practice on the economics alone.
