DePuy Synthes, the Johnson & Johnson orthopaedics business preparing for its spinoff from J&J, agreed on July 16, 2026 to acquire Expanding Innovations. Terms were not disclosed.

Expanding Innovations makes expandable interbody cages for lumbar fusion that lock without screws and are designed to resist cage collapse and vertebral subsidence. Its current devices cover transforaminal and lateral lumbar interbody fusion, with anterior lumbar interbody fusion planned next.

DePuy said the purchase strengthens its spine portfolio and its position in the expandable interbody cage segment, and that the technology will complement its existing spine systems and integrate with the Velys robotic platform. A tuck-in like this one is the most common exit in orthopaedics: a differentiated implant, a buyer with a robot that needs implants to drive, and no price disclosed.
