FDA opened comment on a draft guidance that would put Investigational Device Exemption applications on an electronic submission template. The Federal Register notice ran October 28. Comments close December 28, 2026 under docket FDA-2026-D-11188.
The draft points sponsors at the resources and content FDA has already published for electronic IDE submissions, and describes the template as a guided preparation tool rather than a new content requirement. It carries the usual draft markings: for comment purposes only, and not for implementation. FDA says a final version would set the timetable for the further standards it intends to establish.
For a company heading into its first trial, this is the IDE following the path marketing submissions already took. What FDA asks for does not change. How it has to be packaged eventually will, and a sponsor that assembles its IDE around the template now avoids reformatting a live submission later.
