Medtronic completed its acquisition of SPR Therapeutics on July 17, 2026, paying $650 million in cash for all outstanding equity. The deal was announced on May 20.
SPR makes Sprint, a peripheral nerve stimulation system for acute and chronic pain that uses a temporary lead placed for up to 60 days rather than a permanent implant. FDA cleared it through the 510(k) pathway, the company passed 50,000 implants by the end of 2025, and pooled results from 13 studies show 60 percent of patients reaching at least a 50 percent reduction in pain at the end of the 60-day treatment.
Domenico De Paolis, Medtronic's interim president of neuromodulation, said at announcement that a temporary peripheral nerve stimulation option would let physicians intervene earlier. It is the third acquisition Medtronic has announced in 2026, after CathWorks for $585 million and Scientia Vascular for $550 million, and its CFO has called neuromodulation a growth area expanding at more than 20 percent a year.
