Medtronic closed out its diabetes business on October 14, when it reported the final results of the exchange offer that moved its remaining MiniMed stake to its own shareholders. MiniMed began trading independently on Nasdaq the next day under the ticker MMED.

The offer expired at the end of October 9 and came in oversubscribed, so Medtronic filled it on a pro rata basis at a proration factor of 18.289133 percent. It handed over 252,813,348 MiniMed shares in exchange for 55,032,401 of its own ordinary shares, at a final ratio of 4.5939. Medtronic retains none of MiniMed.

CEO Que Dallara said the company now has the freedom to make the decisions it believes are right for its business. A split-off gets the parent all the way out in one step, rather than leaving a stub stake to sell down over the following year.
