Neurotronics cleared its Sleep Analysis Module, a software only device that estimates total sleep time from a photoplethysmography signal. It reads the PPG trace off an existing pulse oximeter, so no sensor is added and patient setup does not change. The Alachua, Florida company is a Nihon Kohden subsidiary and announced the clearance on November 3.

The module is prescription only, for patients 18 and older, and is an aid to diagnosis rather than the sole basis for one. Labeling says it should not be used where EEG, EOG and EMG allow full sleep staging. Neurotronics will fold it into Polysmith first, to score home sleep apnea tests recorded on NomadAir, and is still finishing integration and verification.

The appeal here is arithmetic. An apnea hypopnea index divided by estimated sleep time rather than total recording time reads higher, which moves patients across a diagnostic threshold without any new hardware on the bedside table.
