Surmodics acquired Alta Biomed and its PzF surface coating, announced October 1. Terms were not disclosed. Surmodics has assumed Alta's operations in Carlsbad, California.
PzF is an ultra-thin polymer surface modification for blood and tissue contacting devices, with six FDA clearances and one PMA approval behind it. It goes onto metals, polymers, medical fabrics and tissue, and is used today in cardiovascular and embolization products. The deal also hands Surmodics a West Coast test lab running coating integrity assessments, acute particulate testing and dynamic human blood loop work.
For a small vascular company, the lab may be the more useful half of this. Hemocompatibility and particulate testing is where device timelines quietly lose a quarter, and there have not been many places to buy blood loop work west of the Mississippi.
